Assessment: Following a hospital admission Miss D was no longer able to walk; despite occasional physiotherapy she had been unable to return to standing or walking. A comprehensive physiotherapy evaluation included a review of: muscle power & joint range-of-movement • Miss D’s splints for her feet • Miss D’s personal goals.
Intervention outcome: a personalised rehabilitation programme was established utilising the benefits of the new hydrotherapy pool where the water temperature is around 34°C and buoyancy assists a variety of exercises.
Results: Mobility/independence: Miss D can now: stand and take steps in the water just holding onto the rail • stand up in the gym, with her new foot splint on to support the limb, using the parallel bars • transfer out of her wheelchair using a sliding board when in the gym • sit on the edge of the gym plinth unsupported, using her core muscles for balance.
Well being: Miss D always enjoys her time in the water and is very interactive in this environment • Miss D has even started swimming again, something she has said she never thought she’d able to do!
